Introduction
There are many men out there who put countless hours into their bodies to achieve a “god-like” appearance. Through hard work, dedication, and motivation, this aesthetic goal should be easily achievable for every man out there, right? Unfortunately, that’s not a factual way to look at it.
There are so many men in the world that try so hard to achieve a chiseled appearance, but sometimes, fat just likes to stick around, giving off a weak and soft look. If this a struggle that you can sympathize with, Gynecomastia surgery may be a procedure that could turn the tide for you.
Dr. Larry Schlesinger strives to provide his gynecomastia patients the results that not only they can be proud of, but will also improve their overall quality of life. For more information on this surgery, please keep reading below.
Gynecomastia is a condition that results in enlarged breasts in men and is repaired with a Male Breast Reduction. A male breast reduction removes excess fat or glandular tissue that contributes to overly large breasts. Factors that exacerbate the symptoms of gynecomastia include hormonal imbalances, excess fat in the area, excess glandular tissue, medications, and genetics. A male breast reduction is the surgical procedure commonly used to reverse the effects of the aforementioned factors and provide a proportionate breast size.
Another way this treatment can provide a higher quality of life is because it can help reduce, or at least help treat male breast cancer. Male breast cancer is often fatal because no one looks at it. To that end, we send all male breast tissue to pathology for analysis. Any of our gynecomastia surgery patients can be assured that he will not only get a cosmetic result but if there is any dangerous pathology present, he will be alerted to it immediately. Female breast cancer is treatable and often curable with the newer techniques utilized today.
Gynecomastia can be corrected with two methods: liposuction or the removal of excess breast tissue via a small incision around the areola. A suction breast reduction is usually all that is required to achieve the desired results and only involves a small incision in the breast so the fatty deposits may be suctioned out.
Liposuction is an excellent technique for eliminating pseudo-gynecomastia which is fat, and some true gynecomastia which is a gland. However, very often, gynecomastia has two components and the final bit of tissue needs to be excised surgically from underneath the nipple along with liposuction.
Patients are required to wear a compression garment over the treated area for seven to ten days, with bandages typically being removed the day after the surgery. Bruising and swelling will occur but will decrease gradually. It is important to avoid heavy exercises for two to three weeks following the surgery and the final results may not be visible for roughly ten weeks following the procedure.
Men suffering from Gynecomastia will find a male breast reduction can promote a masculine appearance to the chest and eliminate embarrassing “man boobs.” Patients find restored self-confidence and more motivation to return to a workout regimen, further promoting a healthy lifestyle.
The effects of a male breast reduction are lasting if the patient maintains a healthy weight, but in cases where gynecomastia again enlarges the breasts, a follow-up male breast reduction can be possible.
Who are the Best Candidates for Gynecomastia?

First Steps
If you feel like the Gynecomastia procedure in Hawaii is right for you, the first step is to schedule your consultation. When you come in for this appointment, you will meet with Dr. Schlesinger, who will listen to your body goals, examine your chest, and answer any questions you may have. He will also ask you some questions regarding your lifestyle and medical history, so it is very important to be open and honest with her because the information you provide helps prevent any unnecessary risks or side effects. He will then create your personal procedure plan. If you agree with the plan, you will then schedule your surgical date with our Patient Coordinator.
On the day of your Gynecomastia, Dr. Schlesinger will perform the surgery as an outpatient procedure, under general anesthesia. Typically beginning with Liposuction, any excess fatty tissue will be removed. A small cannula (tube), is inserted under the armpit or around the areola, then moving back and forth, loosens and eliminates fat deposits through gentle suction. Larger amounts of glandular tissue and skin will need to be excised and removed. Most patients require a combination of both liposuction and excision to achieve a tight, sculpted chest. Once complete, Dr. Schlesinger will place sutures for proper healing.
The surgery will take between one and two hours to complete.
After your Gynecomastia surgery, your chest will be wrapped with a compression bandage to help minimize swelling, bleeding, and bruising. For complex cases where a more intricate approach was used, a small tube for draining may be properly positioned to help with fluid. The outcomes following this procedure are almost immediately visible and most men are extremely excited about the cosmetic enhancement. Any incisions made during surgery take time to heal and any scars left behind are barely seen. With your new, masculine-appearing chest, you may get medical clearance from Dr. Schlesinger to incorporate exercise and weight training, which will help accentuate the surgical results.
