There has been an immense amount of confusion surrounding the hot topic of the longevity of breast implants in Hawaii. The thought of something in your body expiring like a carton of milk left some patients and potential patients with a very uneasy feeling. Lucky for them, years of medical advancements have led surgeons and manufacturers alike to a reassuring general consensus.
One of the most common issues with breast implants is the outer shell failing and causing the implant to rupture. The likelihood of a saline implant and a silicon implant rupturing is about the same (about 1% a year). A saline implant rupture is easy to see, whereas a silicone gel implant rupture usually requires a radiological study. When saline leaks, it is quickly absorbed by the body and the implant will look deflated very quickly. The silicone gel in silicone implants is inert and will not be absorbed by the body, leaving its feel and look relatively the same. If you think you may have an issue with your current breast implants in Honolulu please schedule an appointment with Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, S. Larry Schlesinger, MD, FACS, right away.
In the past it was common for many plastic surgeons to recommend the replacement of silicone gel implants after ten or fifteen years of use. With the development of a newer, more cohesive breast implants, both the manufacturers and surgeons have discontinued the recommendation of this elective replacement, given the patient has not encountered any problems with the implant.
Although there still exist some points of disagreement, most plastic surgeons agree that there is no expiration date to your Honolulu breast implants. This is not to say that your breast implants have a lifetime warranty.
