The goal of a facelift is simple: to refresh and rejuvenate the appearance of the face while maintaining the facial characteristics that make you unique. Technically known as a rhytidectomy, a facelift is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess facial skin and fat. Then, the remaining skin is placed back over the face, removing wrinkles and years of wear and aging from your face.
A facelift can provide a youthful appearance and give you increased self-confidence in your everyday life. If you currently have a deep crease running from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth, an undefined jawline or loose skin on your face, you can expect to benefit greatly from a facelift. The results of a facelift can be dramatic or subtle depending on the patient and their desires.
The results of a facelift are long-term and the longevity of the results depends on the patient and the work done. Many patients only require a minimal incision facelift, eliminating the need for incisions in the scalp that can raise the sideburns – a non-desirable trait for women.
Dr. Larry Schlesinger most often opts to keep his work on top of the superficial muscular aponeurotic system (SMAS) when performing a facelift. There are two main benefits to this approach: the risk of injuring nerves is severely reduced and the result is more natural. A “deep” facelift is performed below the SMAS and produces very drastic changes to one’s appearance. For this reason, Dr. Schlesinger doesn’t offer “deep” facelifts.
