Otoplasty in Honolulu, HI

Ear Surgery, also known as Otoplasty, is a procedure designed to correct overly protruding ears. Luckily for Hawaii ear surgery patients, Dr. Schlesinger is an expert ear surgeon, having worked alongside Dr. Burt Brent, the number one ear surgeon in the world. Thus, Dr. Schlesinger is more than qualified to identify and correct any patients’ ear concerns.

There are three main reasons some people’s ears protrude farther than others:

Underdeveloped anti-helical fold: In normal ears, the anti-helical fold bends the ear so it lays closer to the head. If this fold is underdeveloped, the ear will not bent toward the head and will instead appear more prominently. For this diagnosis, Dr. Schlesinger can place sutures in the ear that simulate a more developed anti-helical fold, resulting in a more natural appearance to the ear.

Overdeveloped ear cartilage: Too much ear cartilage between the ear and the head can cause the ears to protrude. Removing part of the cartilage will cause the ears to bend more naturally toward the head for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Overrepresented ear shell: A protruded ear can result when the outer shell of the ear is overdeveloped. There are multiple ways to correct this, the most common of which is to remove 90% of the outer shell of the ear and sew tissue from the ear to the side of the head.

There are no dressings required after having ear surgery, however a small drain is left under the ear overnight and removed the next day. Most Honolulu ear surgery patients can return to work the following day. In most cases, only local anesthesia is required.

Serving patients from Honolulu, Maui, Kona, Hilo, and across Hawaii, Dr. Schlesinger is an expert at determining the cause of outwardly protruding ears and correcting it with the best possible technique.
