How to Choose a Breast Implant Profile |
As the techniques and technology used by the cosmetic plastic surgeon for breast enhancement improve, so does the ability to customize the profile of the breast. In the early years of breast augmentation, profile was a determination solely based on the size of the implant used (cc volume). Today, in addition to selecting a breast implant size, patients and surgeons have the option of customizing the implant projection. This customization relates directly to the profile of the breast.
The forward projection of the breast can be increased or decreased allowing the breast profile to be enhanced or reduced as desired. This process of customizing the profile of the implant allows patients and surgeons to create a more natural looking breast. Typically, patients can choose from three breast profiles: moderate, mid-range, or high. This choice is entirely dependent on the personal preference of the patient as well as body type, diameter of the chest, and recommendations from the surgeon. Moderate Profile Implant:
This profile has been around forever and while right or a few, has many disadvantages which the other profiles can correct. Many surgeons consider this profile to be the “baseline” to which the other profiles can be compared.
High Profile Implant:
This is perhaps the most popular implant projection choice in Hawaii today. The base diameter is narrower than the base diameter of the moderate profile. This allows for more anterior projection for each breast implant size/volume. Opinions vary on the high profile implant, but in Hawaii, it appears to be the projection and base diameter of choice. At smaller sizes in women with broader chests, this profiles gives less cleavage, but in women with narrower chests or at higher volumes, this projection gives reasonable cleavage with greater anterior projection.
This implant projection offers women with narrow frames a greater degree of flexibility than previous versions. In the “old” days of implantation, the only way to increase forward projection was to increase the size of the implant. This led to many women selecting breast sizes that were disproportionate with their frames in an effort to increase the projection of their breasts. This profile is a vast improvement over the original single profile implant choice.
Mid-Range Profile Implant:
Considered a half size between the moderate profile and the high profile, the mid-range profile is a good compromise between the two.
